After submitting your GST registration application, the waiting period can feel uncertain. Fortunately, the GST portal provides a straightforward way to track your application in real time using the Application Reference Number (ARN).
What is an ARN?
The ARN is a unique 15-character number generated automatically once you submit your GST registration application (Form GST REG-01) using DSC or Aadhaar-based e-verification. It's sent to your registered email and mobile number and serves as your reference for all future correspondence about that application.
Steps to track your application
- Go to the GST portal and navigate to "Services" > "Registration" > "Track Application Status."
- Enter your ARN or the submission date.
- The portal displays your current status.
Understanding the different status stages
- Pending for Processing: Your application has been submitted and is awaiting officer review.
- Pending for Clarification: The officer has raised a query, and you need to respond via Form REG-04 within 7 working days.
- Site Verification Assigned/Pending: Officer has scheduled or completed a physical verification of your business premises, if required.
- Approved: Your GSTIN has been generated, and the registration certificate is available for download.
- Rejected: The application didn't meet requirements; you'll typically need to reapply with corrections.
Typical processing timelines
For applications submitted with Aadhaar authentication and no risk flags, approval typically happens within 3-7 working days. Applications flagged for physical verification or requiring clarification can take up to 30 days or longer.
What to do if there's a delay
- Check your registered email and SMS regularly for clarification notices — these have strict response deadlines.
- If there's no movement after the expected timeline, raise a grievance through the GST portal's "Grievance" section or contact the GST helpdesk.
- Keep your ARN handy for any communication with the tax department or GST Seva Kendra.
Actively tracking your ARN — rather than waiting passively — is the best way to catch and resolve clarification requests before they cause your application to lapse.
